Sweat pouring off my face, I jump over, toss, lift, lunge with and push up on my allotted coconut. The awkward shape combined with the juice moving around inside adds to the difficulty of every move. Its not over yet, our instructor sets us up to do some interval sprints Indian file style carrying a coconut over our heads. Uphill of course.

Bootcamp Bali Style became a game changer. Never again would I look at coconuts the same way.

Those 12 coconuts became the seeds for our “outdoor bamboo gym” at Sharing Bali. Collaborating with some of the best fitness trainers out there we have developed bamboo kettle bells filled with volcanic sand; rice sacks for weights; monkey bars, climbing apparatus, parallel bars and pull-up bars are all made from bamboo; the rice paddies are fertile ground for bear crawling races and trekking the jungle ravines with a rattan walking stick are hill workouts.
Bootcamp Bali Style was one of those inspired ideas that seemed to appear at just the right time. We had all the ingredients – outdoor grounds, treks on our doorstep, real food, simple bungalows, wonderful staff, all in a unique village environment.

I talked a Bootcamp Instructor into joining us. Just needed some equipment. With no funds to build an instant gym, ingenuity kicked in and we made everything ourselves.

It was a simple solution that worked. Little did I know that our approach would put us ahead of the game. There is much talk about functional fitness in the fitness world right now. Simple fitness exercises that give you increased mobility and agility in everyday life. No need for machines. MovNat, CrossFit and Primal Movement are fitness genres that embrace functional fitness. Our bamboo gym is a natural fit with this new take on fitness.

Our first Bootcamp Bali Style in 2008 changed our lives at Sharing Bali.

Move over fluffy white towels. Stand back sleek spas. Sharing Bali retreats created a new model, breaking the concept of detox and deprivation retreats, as well as being the affordable option in a world full of luxury retreats.

We were the first, there were no rules and we started something that was soon to be copied. The way forward became clearer, and a lot of fun. Partnering with experts in CrossFit, Fitness Adventure, Natural Movement, Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi & Nutrition opened new doors.

12 coconuts changed my life.

It seems ridiculous. At no time did they appear on any of my strategic life or business plans for the future. Intuition, ingenuity and sheer perseverance paid off. My appreciation of coconuts is unwavering.
